Seasonal Snow Removal Guidelines

Snow can begin falling as early as October!

At the City of White Plains DPW, we take inclement weather and snow removal operations seriously.
During snow storms, DPW manpower is maximized by including Highway, Forestry, Sanitation and Water Bureaus to work together, along with Public Safety, to clear roads in order of priority:

Primary roads are cleared first, followed by secondary and then tertiary roads.
This order helps the City achieve its goal of keeping roads open so that rescue vehicles are able to make their way, in case of emergencies that may arise during inclement weather conditions.

During any snow event please adhere to the following guidelines:

SAFETY FIRST!

Snow plowing is a serious task which requires full attention from crews.

Children and pets should not be playing in or near the street when you see plows coming through your area.

DO NOT PARK CARS ON THE STREET WHEN IT SNOWS - OR WHEN SNOW IS IN THE FORECAST.

Whether it is day or night, the DPW snow plows must be able to clear the streets of snow safely and effectively.  Cars that remain on the street may get plowed in, and may also receive a summons from the Public Safety department.

  • Sidewalks and crosswalks are to be kept clear of snow and ice.
  • Sidewalks should be shoveled the entire width of the sidewalk as prescribed by the said ordinance Section 160 of the Municipal Code.
  • Curb cuts must be kept clear of snow and ice.

WHEN A STORM ENDS AT NIGHT

  •  Businesses and multifamily residences - sidewalks must be cleared by 10 a.m.
  •  Single family residences - sidewalks must be cleared within ten (10) hours.

WHEN A STORM ENDS DURING THE DAY

  •  Businesses and multifamily residences - sidewalks must be cleared within two (2) hours.
  • Single family residences - sidewalks must be cleared within ten (10) hours.

PRIVATE CONTRACTOR GUIDELINES

Private contractors hired for snow removal for private driveways or parking lots, may NOT push snow into or across public streets. Snow should be plowed to the rear of the private property.  This law will be enforced by the City of White Plains.
