[ARCHIVED] City of White Plains Coronavirus Update - 12/10/21

CITY SEAL - HIGH RES

City of White Plains Coronavirus Update - 12/10/21

We are in the “winter surge” and we are seeing a steady increase in the number of COVID cases in our city and in Westchester County. There are currently 245 active cases in White Plains. Over the last 7 days we have seen an average of 23 new cases per day.

There are currently 16 COVID patients in White Plains Hospital with two patients in ICU. As a point of reference, at the highpoint in 2020 the hospital had just over 240 COVID patients with 87 in ICU. The hospital is committed to ensuring that beds remain available (maintaining a vacancy rate of 10% as required by the state) and continues to perform elective surgeries and care for the general medical needs of our community.

Today, Governor Hochul announced that effective Monday, December 13th masks will be required to be worn in all indoor public places unless the business or venue implements a vaccine requirement. This is a prudent step which I fully support. The winter surge, and the emergence of the new omicron variant, makes being fully vaccinated more important than ever. I am urging vaccinated residents to get their booster shots now. If you are not vaccinated, now is the time. Most pharmacies, as well as the County Department of Health Clinic on Court Street, continue to offer vaccines. Vaccines are safe, effective, and free.

A note about masks. Stepping up to a KN95 or an N95 mask will provide you with better protection than the standard paper or cloth masks as they reduce leakage of unfiltered air when you are inhaling. They are readily available.

Of course we are all ready to be done with COVID but unfortunately it is not done with us. Vaccines, boosters, and masks, together are our best response. We don’t want to go back to where we were. We’ve made it this far White Plains, let's keep up the fight, together.
