Coronavirus update for residents Tuesday, January 19, 2021

CITY SEAL - HIGH RES

The data continues to confirm new COVID cases in Westchester County and in White Plains. There are 11,453 active cases countywide. There are currently an estimated 666 active cases in our City down slightly from yesterday.

White Plains Hospital reports that it is seeing an increasing number of COVID cases at the Hospital and asks that everyone please remember to wear a mask, social distance and hand sanitize. If you test positive for COVID-19, it is important that you self-isolate immediately. The CDC requires you to remain in isolation for at least 10 days after illness onset and at least 3 days after recovery.

The question on everyone’s mind is “When will I get the vaccine”? The priorities for distribution are set by the State as are the locations where vaccinations will take place. Vaccinations are currently open to healthcare workers, people age 65 and older, first responders, teachers, public transit workers, grocery store workers, and public safety workers but the demand far exceeds the supply and so at this time it is very difficult to get an appointment.

The supply of vaccine comes from the federal government and I am hopeful that we will see supply begin to increase over the coming weeks. The state is working to ensure that the infrastructure is in place to efficiently distribute vaccines when they are received. The County Center in White Plains is one of the designated state vaccine “pods” and they have been vaccinating over 1000 people per day. Additional vaccination sites will ramp up as supply increases. In the meantime, I urge all eligible residents to continue to check the state website or call the state Hotline to check for new openings.

In the midst of this pandemic life goes on with all of it’s joys and sorrows. I have some remarkable news to share. Alexa Reyna and Claire Weinstein, two young women on the White Plains High School swim team have both qualified for the US Olympic team trials to be held in Omaha this spring. As remarkable as that is what is even more remarkable is that Alexa is a 9th grader and Claire is an 8th grader. Congratulations to you both we are all proud of you!

Our next call is on January 25th, until then remember we’re standing together by staying apart.
