The right of the people to peaceably assemble is enshrined in our Constitution. The events we have witnessed at the U.S. Capitol today bear no relation to that right. They must be described plainly as what they are: an insurrection. Congress assembled today to receive the certified election results from each state, as required by the Constitution and the 1887 Electoral Count Act. They have thus far been prevented from fulfilling their legal obligation by a mob attempting to violently overturn the outcome of what has repeatedly been verified as a fair and legitimate election. As Americans we have come to take for granted the peaceful transition of power. It is now the responsibility of Congress to reconvene and complete their duty so that the true voice of the people, as expressed through their votes, is honored.
