Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update for Residents, Monday, August 31st, 2020

Seal - gold and blue

The most recent data provided by the county today indicates the cumulative number of people who have tested positive in White Plains since testing began is 1, 929. The county estimates the number of active cases in White Plains to be 26.

It is vital that we all continue to follow the common sense guidelines that have been repeatedly presented. A recent wedding in the state of Maine attended by approximately 65 people has led to at least 87 Covid cases. There are many other examples across the country of similar “super spreader” events. The virus is still present but the actions we have taken together have prevented it from regaining traction in our city.  We must continue to focus on prevention to keep as many people healthy as possible until a vaccine is available that will protect us all. We know we can do it because we have been doing it! Wear your mask!

While promising work continues on a Covid vaccine the seasonal flu vaccine is now becoming available. I urge everyone to get theirs now as demand for the vaccine is anticipated to be high. While the flu vaccine will not protect you from Covid there are concerns that people who contract both illnesses will have a higher risk of complications. Additionally you will be helping our healthcare workers. Should we see a resurgence in Covid, a flu outbreak would further tax our healthcare resources. If you have been looking for something else you can do to protect the health of yourself and others here it is!

I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a relaxing Labor Day. As a result of the Labor Day holiday this coming Monday, our next Covid related call will be Monday, September 14th unless conditions warrant otherwise. Until then remember, we are standing together by staying apart
