Update for Residents on Storm Damage & Power Outages Resulting from Tropical Storm Isaias - 8/5/20, 5:30 PM.

Our city crews worked through the night clearing fallen trees and reopening streets and their work continues. All streets are open other than those that require Con Ed work in order for them to be reopened. Residents may place storm debris at the curb for collection, DPW is suspending the requirement that they be cut and bundled through the week of August 10th.

All city services, including sanitation, are operating normally.

Tropical Storm Isaias has wreaked tremendous damage in the County as a whole. At its peak there were 124,000 customers without power in Westchester. That number had been reduced to 94,000 as of this morning. There are communities where as many as 75% of customers are without service. In White Plains we had an approximate high of 4,356 customers out of service last night. The most recent data provided by Con Ed indicates that the number has been reduced to approximately 2,900.

Being without power is a tremendous inconvenience, particularly given the overlay of the COVID pandemic, and we are doing everything we can to speed recovery. Restoration of electric service is the responsibility of Con Edison and throughout the county it is moving slowly. It is clear that there are insufficient crews to adequately address the scale of the damage. Con Ed has indicated that 100 line personnel from outside the area will start work in the county today and that they are making arrangements to fly in additional crews. We are in constant contact with Con Ed to ensure we receive our fair share of resources as they become available. I have also been driving through the city assessing damage and looking for active crews. I spoke with a crew from Ausable Forks, NY near the Canadian border last night, working to bring lights back to our city. More help will be needed and we have made that clear to Con Ed.

We will continue to post updated information on the city website cityofwhiteplains.com.  In the meantime please stay safe.
