Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update for Residents May 22, 2020

Seal - gold and blue

The most recent data provided by the county today indicates the cumulative number of people who have tested positive in White Plains since testing began is 1,727.The county estimates the number of active cases in White Plains to be 91.

Today Governor Cuomo confirmed that our region should be able to reopen next week if our numbers stay on track. If so, White Plains would enter

Phase 1, in which manufacturing, construction and retail (limited to curbside or in-store pick-up or drop-off) would be allowed to resume. In anticipation of the re-opening the Governor indicated construction sites may begin staging now.

All city offices will be closed this Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day and there will be no garbage pick-up. There will be no paper recycling next week. Paper recycling resumes on Wednesday, June 3rd. If you live on a Monday/Thursday garbage collection route, your trash will be collected on Tuesday and Thursday next week. If you live on a Tuesday/Friday collection route, your trash will be collected on Wednesday and Friday.

Good news for weekend gardeners and those planning to do some spring cleaning, the Department of Public Works will open the Gedney Yard Recycling Facility this Monday, Memorial Day, from 8 am to 12 pm for residents. Although we are not able to hold our Memorial Day Parade this year due to the pandemic it is vital that we pause to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom. Our Veteran’s Advisory Committee has put together a Memorial Day event that will be aired on Optimum channel 75 and FiOS channel 47 and streamed on the city website on Memorial Day every hour starting at 10:00 am thru 10:00 pm, and then for the remainder of the week at noon and 5:00 pm.

The City of White Plains has become a leader in film and television production and now we’re bringing back drive in movies! We’re partnering with the White Plains BID to present drive-ins at various locations in the city for residents on Friday evenings starting June 12th. Stay tuned for films, show times and locations!

In other welcome news, the running tracks at Eastview School, Highlands School, and White Plains High School will reopen tomorrow for solitary exercise. You must wear a mask and maintain social distance. The fields remain closed.

I’d like to wish you all a relaxing Memorial Day weekend and urge everyone to continue your social distancing efforts. We’re making progress every day!

Our next call is scheduled for Tuesday. Until then,

Remember we are standing together by staying apart
