White Plains Citywide Speed Limit Reduced to 25 Miles Per Hour

When is the speed limit changing to 25 MPH?

The new speed limit law changes the speed limit on all White Plains streets from 30 MPH to 25 MPH.

Which streets are affected by the new MPH speed limit?

All citywide streets except for the following roadways (please pay attention to the posted signs in these locations):

  • Bryant Avenue
  • Central Avenue
  • Central Westchester Parkway
  • Mamaroneck Avenue
  • North Broadway
  • North Street
  • Old Mamaroneck Road
  • Tarrytown Road
  • Westchester Avenue
  • White Plains Avenue

Why is the speed limit changing to 25 MPH?

The City of White Plains is reducing its speed limit to 25 MPH in order to make the city safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers and help meet the City's goal of bringing traffic fatalities to zero.  This effort will support walkability.  Data shows that driving at or below 25 MPH improves drivers' ability to avoid crashes.  Pedestrians struck by vehicles traveling at 25 MPH are half as likely to die as those struck at 30 MPH.  If crashes do occur, the severity of injuries is reduced at slower speeds.

How many signs will be replaced?

Approximately 300 new signs will be installed as a result of the new 25 MPH Speed Limit.

Where will the new 25 MPH signs be posted?

New signs will be installed at all the entry points to the City advising motorists that the speed limit is 25 MPH unless otherwise posted.  Additional signs will also be installed on roadways, which branch off of the roads which will continue to have a higher speed limit.
