About Us
The City of White Plains is a civil service agency and hires under the requirements of New York State Civil Service Law and White Plains Civil Service Rules.
General Information for Job Seekers
Administrative, professional, technical, clerical, and code enforcement positions are filled from civil service lists which are established from among qualified candidates who have passed and are reachable from civil service exams. These lists are used by the various departments of the City of White Plains, the White Plains School District and the White Plains Housing Authority. Exams are held when scheduled, which dates can be accessed on our information line. Announcements, with exam details, are posted at various locations and available at our office. Applications are available in our office and on our website, but are accepted only during the announced filing period and must be accompanied by the required non-refundable application fee.
Police Officer and Fire Fighter positions are filled from civil service lists and under the terms of a Federal Consent Decree. Exam announcements and applications are posted on our website and widely advertised when they are scheduled, generally every four years. Applications are accepted only during the announced filing period* and must be accompanied by the required non-refundable application fee.
Labor and maintenance positions do not require a civil service exam and are filled with qualified/skilled candidates. Applications are accepted in our office and forwarded to the Departments of Public Works and Parking, and to the White Plains Housing Authority, as requested by the applicant. Applications are available in our office and on our website.
Most positions are filled at the entry level. Higher level positions are usually filled by promotion and are posted as promotional opportunities or as promotional exams.
The City of White Plains is an EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER and does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, religion, national origin, sex, medical condition or disability, marital status, military or veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, criminal convictions or any other classification protected by Federal, State or Local Law.
