City of White Plains Centennial Photography Project

In 2016 White Plains celebrated the 100th anniversary of its incorporation as a city. We kicked off this special year by distributing 100th anniversary party hats and noise makers at our annual downtown New Year's Eve celebration. In the spring, Downtown Music at Grace Church held a classical music concert in honor of the City's Centennial that featured 2 White Plains graduates who have gone on to become internationally acclaimed musicians. In May, the White Plains Historical Society hosted a Centennial Ball at the White Plains Women’s Club.

The City and the White Plains Historical Society hosted “Colonial Day” in Tibbits Park in June of last year, which showcased life in Colonial White Plains and featured a reading of the Declaration of Independence by Master Storyteller Jonathan Kruk.  Mr. Kruk re-created an important event in the history of our city: The first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in New York State, which occurred in White Plains. The Recreation & Parks Department and the City Clerk together developed 3 historic walking loops which highlight the City's history while encouraging people to exercise at the same time.

Last fall the City worked with the White Plains School District to engage the 4th graders of today in writing a letter to 4th graders living in White Plains 100 years in the future. We received over 100 letters, which were displayed at the Library and then placed in a time capsule.

Our final Centennial project also involved the School District. This time we reached out to WPHS photography teacher Dana Quigley, who worked with her Intermediate Photography students to document the City as it looks today. These photos will be donated to the City Archive.  The City Historian has photographs and drawings of White Plains at various points in its history. This project has created a cache of 2016 photos for future generations to study and enjoy! Stop by and see the photographs on display now in the City Hall Rotunda!

Thank you to the White Plains School District administrators and staff, Gary West, Director of Fine Arts, Dana Quigley, photography teacher, and the student photographers who volunteered for this project:
